Sewage and wastewater pollution is one of the world’s most significant yet overlooked environmental challenges. Nearly half of global wastewater is discharged untreated into rivers and oceans, carrying pathogens, harmful chemicals, microplastics and other pollutants that threaten marine ecosystems, biodiversity and human health. As sewage pollution crosses national boundaries, tackling it requires coordinated international action.
Although sewage and wastewater pollution is recognised across existing international frameworks on pollution, biodiversity, climate change and public health, current provisions remain fragmented, indirect or non-binding. A Global Sewage Treaty presents an opportunity to create a coordinated international framework that strengthens global action to reduce sewage pollution, protect ocean health and safeguard communities that depend on healthy marine environments.
The Ocean Sewage Alliance is a global coalition of researchers, NGOs and industry professionals dedicated to eliminating sewage and wastewater pollution from the ocean. Operating as a project of the non-profit incubator Multiplier, the Alliance brings together expertise across water, sanitation and marine conservation to drive ambitious policy change and build support for a Global Sewage Treaty.
Over the next 12 months, Blue Pangolin Consulting, will provide strategic, technical and advisory support to the Alliance. The work will focus on stakeholder engagement and coalition building, strategic advisory and campaign support, and policy and advocacy guidance to help build international momentum behind the campaign.
